EMERGENCY FIRST AID AND CPR. COURSE OVERVIEW
Emergency First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) are critical lifesaving skills used to assist individuals in medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, choking, severe bleeding, or unconsciousness. Here’s a basic guide:
Emergency First Aid Steps
- Check the Scene – Ensure the area is safe before approaching the injured person.
- Check for Responsiveness – Tap the person and ask loudly, "Are you okay?"
- Call for Help – Dial emergency services (911 or local number) if the person is unresponsive.
- Check for Breathing – Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds.
- Provide First Aid
- If not breathing, begin CPR.
- If bleeding, apply direct pressure.
- If choking, perform abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver).
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Steps
For Adults & Older Children:
- Position the Person – Lay them on their back on a firm surface.
- Chest Compressions –
- Place both hands on the center of the chest (lower half of the sternum).
- Push hard and fast at least 2 inches deep at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
- Rescue Breaths –
- Tilt the head back, lift the chin, pinch the nose, and give 2 breaths after every 30 compressions.
- Continue CPR – Until emergency responders arrive or the person shows signs of life.
For Infants (Under 1 Year):
- Use two fingers for chest compressions, about 1.5 inches deep.
- Perform 30 compressions followed by 2 small puffs of air.
Additional First Aid Basics
- Choking – Perform abdominal thrusts (Heimlich) or back slaps for infants.
- Severe Bleeding – Apply direct pressure and elevate the wound if possible.
- Burns – Run cool water over the affected area for at least 10 minutes.
- Shock – Lay the person down, elevate their legs, and keep them warm.
