A Well Control Course is a specialized training program designed for oil and gas industry professionals who work on drilling rigs, workover rigs, or well servicing operations. Its main purpose is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, detect, and respond to well control incidents such as kicks, blowouts, and other pressure-related problems in drilling and well servicing.
Understand wellbore pressure fundamentals (hydrostatic, formation, surface pressures).
Learn to detect kicks early and take corrective actions.
Operate blowout preventer (BOP) equipment correctly.
Apply well control methods (driller’s method, wait-and-weight, volumetric, bullheading).
Maintain safety standards as per IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors) or IWCF (International Well Control Forum).
Well control courses are usually offered in different levels:
Introductory / Awareness Level – For support staff and beginners.
Fundamental / Driller Level – For drillers, toolpushers, and operational staff.
Supervisory Level – For wellsite supervisors, engineers, and company men.
Advanced / Specialist Level – For high-pressure or complex well operations.
Principles of well control
Causes of kicks and blowouts
Kick detection methods
Shut-in procedures
BOP equipment operation and testing

Most companies require certification from recognized bodies:
IWCF (International Well Control Forum)
IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors)
These certificates are usually valid for 2 years and need renewal.
