1. Kick Indicators

Be alert to early warning signs:

• Increase in pit volume

• Decrease in pump pressure with same stroke rate

• Increase in pump stroke rate to maintain pressure

• Flow rate increase (flowing well with pumps off)

• Gas-cut mud, drilling break, or abnormal torque/drag

2. Immediate Actions (Driller’s Response)

1. Stop drilling / space out the drill string.

2. Shut down pumps.

3. Close the annular preventer (or pipe rams if annular fails).

4. Check well shut-in:

   • Shut in drill pipe (SIDPP)

   • Shut in casing pressure (SICP)

3. Record and Stabilize

• Record shut-in pressures (SIDPP, SICP).

• Record pit gain.

• Notify Toolpusher / Supervisor.

• Ensure choke manifold is lined up and ready.

4. Kill Preparation

• Calculate kill mud weight (KMW):

  $$KMW = Current\ Mud\ Weight + \frac{SIDPP}{0.052 \times TVD}$$

• Select killing method (Driller’s Method / Wait and Weight).

• Prepare kill sheet with stepwise pressures.
